Smalltown DJs – Best of 2012

By: Onya Ganja

Smalltown DJs are two guys (Pete Emes and Mike Grimes) from Calgary, Alberta. There they own and operate The HiFi Club. The two of them have been a DJ duo for over a decade but I just started following them last month after they made my beloved Good People EP with fellow Canadian DJ Grandtheft.

While studying for my winter exams I spent much of my time inhaling copious amount of weed with Good People on repeat. I would resent Smalltown DJs and Grandtheft for this distraction but I am somehow still an honour student so … maybe I should thank them? They say classical music can help one study effectively, I now propose “banjo bangers” can do the same.

There is something else I need to thank Smalltown DJs for. I’ve been searching for something new to listen to for the past few days. It has been driving me mad. That first moment when you hear something you are super into has to be one of the best feelings ever. Even better than love at first sight … because it doesn’t spiral out of control as often.

I could fall in love with this mix playing, wait, no I did. I love this mix, each track and the flow of it all. I also fell in love with Smalltown DJs’ and perhaps most poignantly, I fell in love with 2012 all over again. Great DJs force us to fucking dance and crank it up by reminding us of the amazing music we have forgotten about or missed out on. These guys are great DJs.

This is the perfect soundtrack for any activity, e.g., dancing around your living room (just ask the creepy old man who always looks in my window). In addition, next time I pack up all my bags to escape a city because I’ve created some terrible romantic mess. This is what I’m going to listen to when I drive away. I’ve already burned it onto digital vinyl for said occasion.

Enjoy …

p.s. Pete Emes, one-half of Smalltown DJs used to be a geologist! Which is a very interesting fact if you are as high as I am right now.

Massive Attack – Essential Mix

By: Onya Ganja

So, for the past few days I’ve been laying around the house smoking a mixture of six different kinds of weed and listening to this “Massive Attack” mix. This mix was featured on the BBC “Essential Mix” radio show back in 1994, yet it is still effin’ fresh to me. The “Essential Mix” is good like that. Although, I am fairly pissed there are hardly any women featured on this radio show. Siggghhh, it is hard being an angry lesbian sometimes.

This mix makes me forget my angry lesbian ways though, in fact when I listen to it sometimes the whole world is lost to me. Definitely a mix I will listen to for the rest of my life. Want to know why? Well, as some douche with a fake British accent would say  – It is truly spiffing, cuz it’s fuckin brilliant yo” …

Toke it easy!
